Do you have a strategy for getting blog traffic?

Social bookmarking, RSS directories, and others can sure help

The number 2 question that I get in my survey is "How do I get traffic to my blog?"

There are a variety of ways but taking the time to bookark your site at the social bookmarking sites and submit to the various RSS directories can be a big help.

It doesn't provide immediate results but it does start to increase over time. It also helps to increase your ranking in the search engines which will also help to generate more visitors for you.

Taking the time to do these little things on a regular basis can make a huge difference in your visitor count.

One of the surprising things is the number of visitors you can get from your RSS feed. Being in the directories only increases that.

Blog exchanges do they help?

Having run a blog exchange which we have since closed, I'm not sure that blog traffic exchanges are a good thing for the average blogger to generate traffic.

Blog exchanges are usually loaded with a variety of blogs and you get traffic from people viewing your blog after you have viewed theirs. Unfortunately, there is no reason for people to actually read your blog.

The person surfing in a blog exchange is interested primarily in generating credits and as such has no reason to take the time to actually read what you have written.

Occasionally you will find someone that starts to read your blog especially if you have written quality information, and it will generate a reader. Overall though it is not the best way to generate traffic to your blog and most of the Web 2.0 items will do much better.

Taking the time to submit to the various directories and to use a social bookmarking sites will deliver you much better traffic than any of the blog exchanges that I have tried.

Blog exchanges can each give you a quick visitor count but do not usually generate readers, which is the ultimate goal of all bloggers
